About Nyungwe National Park (Rwanda)

Located in southwestern Rwanda bordering Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nyungwe National Park covers approximately 1,019 square kilometers of high-altitude tropical rainforest. This park is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity, harboring over 1,000 species of plants and 300 bird species, including several endemics. Nyungwe is particularly famous for its primate population, where visitors can observe chimpanzees and at least 13 other primate species, including colobus monkeys and baboons. The terrain is mountainous and richly forested with numerous rivers, waterfalls, and swampy sections, with elevations ranging from around 1,600 to 2,950 meters. Established as a forest reserve in 1933 and later upgraded to a national park in 2004, Nyungwe plays a critical role in regional watershed protection as the source of several major rivers, including the Ruvuvu and Mwogo.

Visitors to Nyungwe can enjoy an array of outdoor activities including guided chimpanzee trekking, canopy walkway walks that offer panoramic views of the forest, extensive hiking trails highlighting spectacular waterfalls like Kamiranzovu and Isumo Falls, and bird watching at Nyungwe’s renowned birding hotspots. The park’s dense forest and wildlife make it a premier destination for nature lovers and adventure travelers aiming to experience one of Africa's most biologically diverse and least disturbed montane rainforests. The facilities include multiple entry points, knowledgeable guides, and eco-lodges designed to minimize environmental impact while providing comfortable access to the wilderness. Nyungwe’s unique ecological and cultural importance combined with its range of outdoor activities make it a key conservation site and a compelling destination for visitors to East Africa.
